January, 2015. Destination: Auschwitz
It’s winter, it’s cold and when you arrive to Auschwitz, you will feel chills down your back only because you know about the mass murder that happened inside. We arrived to Oświęcim in a very “vintage” bus, with background music playing Louis Armstrong’s “It’s a wonderful world” song. Pretty ironic, huh? The city here is quiet, the buildings and the houses are simple and old…
Exploring Auschwitz – Birkenau Museum – no entry fee (you can go by group and pay a guide or buy a map of the camp and go by yourself). Not all rooms are opened and it takes about one hour (by yourself) to visit Auschwitz I. Then, you can take the shuttle bus that takes you to Birkenau.
Birkenau, the death camp is huge and most of the buildings are destroyed. There you can feel the pain and imagine the cruel reality.
No need to say more, it is definitely a different type of tourism. I will let the pictures to speak for themselves.
May they rest in peace!
